Our Philosophy

Parallel-Play is a stage of social development where children play separately but adjacent to one another—they are engaged in a constant process of observation and adaptation—each modifying their own play accordingly. We are always observing, adapting, and making our work feel like play.

Parallel-Play was founded in 2009 by husband and wife duo Jay and Shannon Doronio. The pair met as students in a Typography critique at OTIS College of Art & Design, married in 2012, and became parents in 2014 and 2016. Our adaptive business model has allowed us to practice socially responsible design for non-profit clients, check-off bucket list dream projects, and pursue our individual interests in education, agency work, sneakers and social justice.

Jay Doronio is a designer, illustrator, and Creative Director who has served up fresh content for clients like Google, Kaggle, Wyss Foundation, NatGeo and C-Span.

Shannon Doronio is a designer, illustrator, consultant and Department Chair of the Graphic & Multimedia Design program at College of the Canyons in Velancia, California.
